The Four Flames Decluttering Personalities

Hearth

I can't get rid of that!

Meet Gracie.

She loves cozy spaces filled with memories, nostalgia, and warmth. Every item in her home has a story, and getting rid of something feels like erasing a piece of her past.

She wants a home that feels calm and clutter-free, but when she tries to declutter, her brain locks up, overwhelmed by too many emotions at once. What if she regrets it? What if she needs that thing later? Her sentimental heart makes every decision feel big.

Do you feel like letting go of belongings means letting go of memories? If you struggle to part with sentimental items, you might relate to Gracie’s experience.

Your Decluttering Challenges

Every item feels like a part of your history or a connection to someone you love.
You worry that if you let something go, you’ll wish you had it later.
When everything holds meaning, it’s hard to know where to start.

How to Honor the Past & Make Space for the Present

Story safekeeping

For Hearths, letting go of items can feel like erasing history. Instead of forcing yourself to “declutter ruthlessly,” this method helps you honor the memories while making space. Through the steps in this method, you will find that you don’t have to keep everything to keep what matters.

How to Do It:

  1. Pick a shelf or small box in your space, and set a 15-minute timer.
  2. As you look at the shelf or in the box, allow yourself to think of the stories associated with the items there.
  3. Curate, don’t collect. Keep only the items that hold joy, comfort or a story you want to share—whether with yourself or others.
  4. Let go of items that bring you down, make you feel guilty, or whose stories you can’t remember any longer.
  5. If it’s hard to let go, capture the story and a photo. Write a short note or record a voice memo about why it mattered, then take a picture before letting it go.
  6. When the timer goes off, celebrate your progress! Now you can stop or set it for another 15 minutes.
  7. Give items new life. Display, repurpose, or pass them on where they’ll be appreciated.

Why This Is Unique:

Hearths are often told to just “take a picture,” but that alone isn’t enough. This method prioritizes storytelling so you feel at peace with what you keep and what you release.
